Intern with Advice Project Media

Advice Project Media is now accepting applications for youth (12 - 18) and young adult leaders (19-25) interested in interning with us for the 2016-2017 school year. These internships are journalistic in nature, and involve a serious commitment between October, 2016 to June, 2017 (please see dates and times at the end of this post).

Do you have a passion for learning about gender and environmental issues? Do you believe that the world would be a better place if we worked to save our rainforests and help secure land rights for indigenous peoples? Want to craft stories that affect social change? Interested in examining feminist issues both in your own community and around the world? Great! We have the following internships available, and are looking for three interns to fill each position:

EDITOR/WRITER INTERNS: Responsibilities would include sourcing stories/writers and contributing articles/blog posts.
FILMMAKER INTERNS: Responsibilities would include crafting short films about gender/environmental issues, as well as assisting with films currently in production.

Our application process is robust and should take you at least a couple of hours (perhaps longer!), but once accepted as an intern, we promise it will be fun, and that we'll assign you with only two short writing or video projects per month (although we'll give you more if you want more!). You can also expect that some of your articles and videos would be republished to The Huffington Post, and that you'd be offered other opportunities as they were made available to publish stories with other publications. We want to help our interns fill their writing/video portfolios with important stories.

If either of the above internships interests you, then please answer the following questions and send to us for consideration. We realize that we're asking many questions, but we really want to get a sense of who you are, and also want to see that you're serious about wanting to intern with us! We treat our teen interns and journalists the same way we treat the adults who work with us - with respect. And we give the same sorts of assignments to youth as we do to adults and we expect the same journalistic integrity. In short, we trust the teens we work with, and welcome YOUR ideas.

Our questions:

What is your name, age, and location?
Why are you interested in this internship?
What experience do you have writing, editing, and/or filmmaking?
We'd love to get an idea of stories you'd like to work on. Could you please send us three proposed headlines, with a sentence or two about each story?
If applying for the editor/writer internship: How would you reach out to other youth to source stories?
If applying for the filmmaker internship: What is your process for creating videos? For example, if we asked you to put together a short two-minute video about a youth meeting at the UN, how what would be your process? Also, would you be willing both shoot new footage as well as work with footage made available to you?
Would you be willing to work within Advice Project Media's editorial guidelines?
An adult mentor would be assigned to work with you. How willing are you to accept constructive criticism?
Why would you be perfect for this internship? Essentially, why should we choose YOU?
We will host bi-weekly to monthly intern meetings in New York City. Some of these meetings will serve to educate about some of the issues or to go over story guidelines. Others will simply allow us time to hang out and get to know each other. If you are in New York City, would you be willing to meet at least monthly, and at most bi-weekly? If yes, which evenings would you be free? if you aren't located in New York City, would you be willing to connect via Skype or Google Hangouts?
Do you have experience managing social media? Would you be interested in assisting with Advice Project Media's social media management?
Do you have regular access to the Internet, a computer, and, if a filmmaker, do you have your own equipment?
What are you hoping to get out of this internship?
Do you speak another language besides English? What is your proficiency? Would you be able to assist with translating?
Are you willing to sign a contract that states your commitment to interning with us for the entire 2016 - 2017 school year?
Are you interested in traveling the world to work with other youth towards social change?

Also, please submit a short article or video. We're asking you to do this so that you can wrap your head around a topic, show us your research skills, and give us an idea of your writing and/or video-making skills. We do NOT expect perfection, and all of our interns will receive training and support. Below are the brief "assignments":

If applying for an editor/writer internship: Please write a brief article (500-750 words) about gender and the conservation (specifically, about tropical rainforests - extra points if you mention "land rights!"). Your article should incorporate at least two quotes/ideas/statistics from reputable sources. You might be writing about issues happening in another country, but please make it clear why the issues matter to YOU and to YOUR community. Essentially, why should they matter to readers from around the world? In your brief article, please focus on partnering a problem with a solution. Don't worry - we're not looking for perfection! We simply want to get an idea of your writing style and ideas. Note -- By sending us your writing, you give your permission to have it go through an editing process and potentially be published to our website.
If applying for a filmmaker internship: Please submit a brief video (40 seconds to 1.5 minutes) introducing yourself and letting us know why you're passionate about gender and environmental issues (specifically in rainforests), Why do the issues matter to you? Please incorporate one or two researched statistics (from reputable sources!). If you live in New York City, why do you care about what's happening, say, in the Peruvian rainforest? Note -- We might share your video on our website - so make sure to introduce yourself as though you already have the job! Be confident and let your personality shine through. By sharing your video with us (via Youtube, please), you give us permission to share it on our website.

Currently meetings take place on Sunday afternoons, two weeks apart. We may begin meeting weekly depending on the interests of interns and the projects they undertake. Therefore, please make sure you are available most Sundays before you apply.:
